Spring Church is a Community of Practice

In the Great Commission (Matthew 28:18-20), Jesus tells his followers to go and make disciples.  The verb “go” in verse 19 is an aorist passive participle, meaning that Jesus knows and assumes that his followers are already going to go somewhere, and they are to make disciples as they go along the way.

So we don’t stop our normal lives, try to make disciples for a bit, and then resume our normal lives. Instead, our discipleship is embedded in the practices of our ordinary lives.  James. K.A. Smith says, “The orientation of the heart happens from the bottom up, through the formation of our habits of desire. Learning to love (God) takes practice.”

Because learning to love God takes practice, Spring Church is committed to practicing together daily spiritual practices (such as rituals and prayers) that help us love Jesus and walk in the direction He is walking. We eat together and as we eat, we have questions that help us reflect on our lives and engage with each other.  Our play cultivates a common friendship with diverse people, and sends us with the reminder that it is Christ who sustains everything. On this page you can read more about specific rituals and prayers that have been curated from friends at Spring Church who are learning how to practice walking with Jesus in their everyday lives.

Practicing Rituals

Our everyday habits help us walk in the direction Jesus is walking. We do these in relationship with others, God, and ourselves.
