Juneteenth

Post by Matt McCoy

Today is June 19th, 2020.

Juneteenth.

Last week somebody mentioned Juneteenth, and I realized that I don’t have a clue what Juneteenth is about.  I’ve grown up hearing about it, it’s on my electronic calendar, and it’s always been around me.  Yet, all I knew was, “It’s a holiday for African-Americans.”

And I guess that’s part of the problem right now, isn’t it?

The prophet Joel talks about how plagues, pestilence, and pandemic brings to the surface things that are easily overlooked.  And here, in this pandemic, I feel like I’m looking at a holiday on my calendar for the first time.

The world is full of great resources to help us all learn what today is all about, so rather than read another long-winded blog from me, take some time to educate yourself and your family about the importance of Juneteenth.  It’s worth the extra effort for you to do your own research here, if you find yourself in a similar situation to me.

And, to all my African-American friends who are reading this blog, know that I’m profoundly sorry for not paying attention to Juneteenth for all these years.
